We connect low-income, uninsured Durham County residents to donated specialty medical care provided by physicians and other healthcare practitioners, along with ancillary services and hospital care. This system, implemented in many communities around the US, is based on the original Project Access model developed in Buncombe County, NC in 1995.
We accept referrals from a primary care provider at Lincoln Community Health Center (including its satellite clinics) and from other free and charitable clinics by special arrangement. Patients must meet the following qualifications:
- Have lived in Durham for the past six months
- Have household income below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level
- Be uninsured and not qualify for affordable health insurance coverage
Prescription medications resulting from specialty care consultations may be filled at Lincoln Pharmacy, or by special arrangement at Duke Pharmacies or a local pharmacy, for a small copay. See Lincoln Pharmacy’s formulary
Our work is currently made possible by financial support from Durham County Department of Public Health, The Duke Endowment, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation, along with donated office space by Duke Regional Hospital. Training and technical assistance is provided by Care Share Health Alliance.

Each year, over 2,000 Durham County residents receive timely specialty medical care from physicians and other providers who donate their time, as well as clinics and hospitals which donate their services. Nearly all specialty care physicians in Durham County participate in this project—by sharing the effort, they are making a big impact on the health of our community.
